FAQ

Questions, answered briefly.

The app

Is Just the Carbs free?

The app is free to install from Google Play, and the web calculator is free to use.

Which phones does it run on?

Android. There is no iPhone version.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account and no sign-in, and the app has no advertising.

How do I find a food?

Scan a barcode, search by name or brand, scan the nutrition label, read a barcode or label from a photo, or type the barcode in.

What portions can I enter?

Grams, millilitres, or a count such as slices or pieces when the app has a trustworthy weight for one item.

Does it work offline?

Foods you’ve looked up before, and your saved dishes and portions, work offline. Looking up something new needs a connection.

Does it show protein?

Only if you switch it on. It’s off by default, carbs stay the main answer, and the protein figure comes from Open Food Facts product data.

Accuracy

Where do the product values come from?

From Open Food Facts where available. Values can be missing or change, so check the packaging and confirm the value and portion before relying on a calculation. You can correct a value in the app, and a value you have checked is never silently replaced.

Which carbohydrate figure does it use?

The total carbohydrate line. It makes no fibre, sugar or net-carb adjustments. See how to calculate carbs from a food label.

My label only gives carbs per serving. What do I do?

Convert it to a per-100 value first: carbs per serving × 100 ÷ serving size in grams. The guide on per 100 g versus per serving walks through it.

Does it calculate insulin?

No. It calculates the carbohydrate grams in a portion of food. It does not give insulin doses or medical advice and does not replace advice from a healthcare professional.

Your data

What leaves my phone?

A barcode lookup, a product photo, and, only if you use Search by name, the words you type. All go to Open Food Facts. Your portions, results and history are not sent. The privacy policy has the full detail.

How do I delete my data?

There is no account to delete. Settings has actions to clear recent history or clear saved products, and uninstalling the app removes everything stored on the phone.
